LATE HISTORY: Tommy's Little Reb, aka Big Jake, was broke out in western tack. Then he spent over a year just out on pasture. Then a trainer took him to his barn and turned him into a nice saddle horse. So JD bought Jake and took him home. At first, he was perfect (he remembered and did everything the trainer taught him). But then when he wasn't worked as much as he was used to, he became very energetic, even bucking when he was asked to go into a canter. MORE RECENTLY: JD called me to come out and help him with Jake so that he could get him going well enough to sell him. I have been working with Jake somewhat consitently since the middle of July. When I first started working with him, the most trouble I had was going into the canter when he bucked. But after the third time I rode him, he stopped bucking. I took him to a Fox River Saddle cicuit show in August. I got 6th in English Equitation, and he got 5th in English Pleasure.
RIGHT NOW: Jake is all around pretty good. He is quiet, he has EXCELLENT ground manners. He is good for the farrier, the vet, and it is easy to pick up his feet. He even stands well for sinching up the girth - he does not try to nip as many horses do. In preparation for the shows, I have hoof blacked him, bathed him, braided him, and clipped him. He does very well at all of these things. His only vice is bridling him - he turns his head away from me when I try to put the bridle on, so if I leave the halter on under the bridle, I can fairly easily put the bridle on - he does not throw his head up, just away from me. If I use a treat when I put his bridle on, it is easy to bridle him. When he is out on green pasture, he is easy to catch - he does not run away. And when he is just in a padock without food, he walks up to me so I can put on his halter and lead. I have been riding Jake in my English show tack in preparation for the shows, however, JD rides Jake in western tack with one hand on the reins - Jake can neckrein well. I have shown Jake in English classes because his gaits are not smooth. No matter how big or small his stride, he has a lot of up and down movement. He knows his job, and he does it well, both at home in the padock and in the show ring. He has a light mouth and is easy to control. It is easy to ride him by yourself away from the barn - he is not herd bound - and he is also safe to ride in a big group. Right now, he is the perfect backyard horse, but with as little showing experience he has had, he is already making huge progress. I have just recently started him over jumps - he likes them, and he did so well that I can confidently advertise him as having great hunter prospect. Jake is very sound when he is barefoot, but right now he has shoes on the fronts to have a neater appearance for the shows. LOOKING AHEAD: JD hopes to sell Jake before winter, but now Jake is a nice ride, and he sort-of wants to keep him. JD is interested in buying a quiet backyard horse that anyone can ride and be safe and have fun on. So he may trade if you have what he is looking for. I will be showing Jake in some English flat classes and maybe Hunter Hack. I am taking Jake to a Fox River Saddle Club Open Show on SUNDAY SEPT. 8, 2002. If you are interested in seeing him at the show, or IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS then call me at (262) 628-0724. Or you can reach Jake's owners at (262) 670-0370 or EMAIL Jake's owners at jldauss@execpc.com The show will be held at the Waukesha Exposition Grounds which can be found on hwy FT which is also called Northview. It will take place from 7:30 until 4 or 5 PM.
